“For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.” -Romans 8:2 KJV
Rules.
They are both the bane of our existence and yet without them we have chaos. Don’t do this! Don’t do that! It seems in our modern society the rules pile up like grains of sand across all the beaches on the Earth. The Code of Hammurabi had around 325 laws. Thirty-Seven Hundred years later the United States is estimated to have more than 325 THOUSAND laws. And yet with all of these rules and regulations Crime still fills the streets with stronger devastation than Noah’s flood. And yet if we got rid of these Laws we would be far worse off. How come we can’t set up rules and regulations to bring about peace in our nation and our own personal lives. In order to answer this we must get to the root of the matter: Our hearts. There is another law that rules our hearts. This law is the law of sin and death. What does that mean? It is a law of the universe that all things come from a high state of energy to a low state of energy. This is the law of entropy. Excited and orderly states of matter and energy try to equalize and revert back to a sea of randomness. In other words: death. For example, rain that falls on a mountain tries to always make it back to the sea. Or a star, which has been burning for billions of years, runs out of fuel and explodes spreading its energy across astronomical units of space. Or you, who tries his best to keep his room tidy, somehow the clothes always make their way to the floor. This natural tendency is true in all of our lives. Sin itself is this law of entropy. The more we try to do good the more sin pulls us towards destruction.
What is the solution? When we look at our examples of entropy there is one way we can decrease entropy in a system. The solution is for an outside force to add more energy to the system. For example, for the rain to make it back up to the top of the mountain, the sun must evaporate the water in the ocean, so that the water will float up, collect into clouds, and rain on the mountain. Or for a Star to ignite again, the force of gravity must pull the hydrogen gasses back together until the gas ball is massive enough to ignite in a nuclear fire into another star. And in order for your room to be clean again, you must go pick up your dirty laundry off the floor and put it in the washing machine and then back in your closet. Likewise for us to be freed from the bondage of sin and death, we must be re-energized by an outside force. We must be freed from the law of sin and death which hangs so heavily on our shoulders. And this is what Jesus Christ, the outside force who invaded our world, does. He comes into our lives, baptizes us, cleanses us of our filth, lifts us up, and unites us to himself, giving us infinite energy to perform works of true righteousness. This new law, a law of the universe, is that Jesus Christ, the God-Man, reverses our state of entropy. As God, He has done a new thing, a new law of the universe. Death no longer has power over mankind. We no longer need to follow the universal law that all things return to chaos. Now through faith in Christ, we shall live forever!
