What is a Church?

There is the concept of the Universal (Catholic) church, but in this post I will be talking about individual church congregations. A church is a place where the people of God come to receive the Word of God, The Sacraments, and Church Discipline so that there faith is nourished

Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching.

1 Timothy 4:13 ESV

And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.

-Acts 2:42 ESV

For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

1 Corinthians 11:26 ESV

“If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother. But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses. If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church.

Mathew 18:15-17

If a particular church does not have these three things at best the church is sick, at worst it is not a church. That does not mean there is not Christians there, it just means that it is not a church. Use wise, discerning judgement. If a church starts to exhibit a lack of these three key elements then maybe it is time to talk to the Pastor about it or leave that church
